All Within My Hands Donates to West Coast Wildfire Relief Efforts

SEPTEMBER 28, 2020

Wildfires have become a cruel and unwelcome annual benchmark in California, and this year we have seen them tragically extend across the entire west coast of our country. This is the fourth consecutive year, dating back to the formation of the Foundation, that All Within My Hands has activated to support fire relief: the critical local services component of our mission.

This year, we will be donating a sum of $250,000 to five organizations on the front line of this environmental crisis that has made its way into the lives and homes of far too many. The organizations include the California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Relief Fund, the Oregon Community Foundation’s Wildfire Relief and Recovery Fund, the Community Foundation Santa Cruz County’s Fire Response Fund, the North Valley Community Foundation Wildfire Relief and Recovery Fund, and the Community Foundation of North Central Washington NCW Fire Relief Fund.

We would like to encourage you to join us in supporting those in need and our first responders in any way you can by donating money, non-perishable food, clothing and other supplies, or by giving your time volunteering or providing safe, temporary housing. Every little bit helps.

October 10, 2020 Update:

Inspired by the news of our latest grant: $250k toward wildfire relief, one of our major donors came forward with an additional $100k to be split between the Community Foundation Sonoma County and the Napa Valley Community Foundation. We are blown away by this gift!

We share our work with the mission of inspiring others. When the Metallica Family gets involved and chips in even a single dollar, it empowers us to extend our reach. A huge thank you to all AWMH supporters out there!

The California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Relief Fund Receives $100,000 from AWMH

Crews continue to battle 26 major wildfires in California, with over 18,200 firefighters on the front lines.

Since the beginning of the year, there have been well over 8,000 wildfires that have burned over 3.6 million acres in California. Since August 15, when California’s fire activity elevated, there have been 26 fatalities and over 6,700 structures destroyed.

In the aftermath of a disaster, immediate needs for victims can include shelter, food, cash and other basic needs. A community’s recovery is often more complex and depends on the scope of the disaster and an affected community’s specific context and needs. For these reasons, the California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Relief Fund supports both mid-term to long-term recovery efforts for those affected by California wildfires.

The Oregon Community Foundation’s Wildfire Relief and Recovery Fund Receives $75,000 from AWMH

Communities across the state are grappling with loss and still face immediate danger due to wildfires. Join generous Oregonians to support immediate response and help communities recover and rebuild. Contributions to emergency relief already exceed $1 million.

[The OCF allows donor to support immediate wildfire emergency response by supporting] local organizations responding with shelter, food and other emergency services and serving people of color and other disproportionately impacted communities.

[The OCF has also established the 2020 Community Rebuilding Fund.] The goal: to gather resources and plan for what comes next after the extraordinary devastation brought by wildfires across a state already reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic and consequences of racial injustice.

The Community Foundation Santa Cruz County Fire Response Fund Receives $25,000 from AWMH

The Fire Response Fund at Community Foundation Santa Cruz County was created August 19, 2020 to address the relief and long-term recovery needs of Santa Cruz County to recover and rebuild from the devastating fires that have struck our community.

Santa Cruz County, already struggling with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, is now in the midst of another disaster--the CZU August Lightning Complex Fires. Donations to the Community Foundation's Fire Response Fund benefit the nonprofit agencies and organizations directly assisting individuals with unmet needs.

When a disaster strikes, the majority of funds raised go to immediate relief, while the recovery and rebuilding process may take many years. We know there will be significant and long-term needs for our fellow community members to rebuild their lives. We are already and will continue to make grants for immediate relief. Long after media attention has shifted away from our community, we will be here, committed to providing support that addresses the most critical needs of our nonprofits and their clients.

[As a result of the North Complex Fire alone, destruction includes] more than 250,000 acres burned, over 400 homes destroyed or damaged, [and] thousands of people evacuated.

The Community Foundation Sonoma County Receives $50,000 from AWMH

Sonoma County has seen unimaginable hardship these past three years. A fire that destroyed over 5,300 homes in 2017, flooding and a 77,000 acre fire in 2019, and now the compounding burden of the coronavirus and massive fires coming at the same time.

We launched the Sonoma County Resilience Fund in 2017 to support our community’s long-term disaster recovery and resilience. We have made more than $10 million in grants to support nonprofit organizations working on the front lines of disaster recovery. Our work continues.
